Overcoming Fear

Genesis 3:8-10

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

Last Sunday at the start of the sermon Pastor Sam introduced Ryan Wiggins from Young Life, Singapore – a charity which aims to introduce kids to Jesus Christ. Ryan shared Young Life’s mission.

Pastor Sam’s sermon addressed the significance of fear.  Fear often holds us back, and we are willing to give it power. In the Bible, there are many examples of fear: Adam hid from God, the apostles went into hiding after Jesus was crucified, and the prodigal son was afraid as he returned to his father. In these examples, between the fear and the overcoming of the fear there was a period of waiting. In the parable of the prodigal son, when the son returned, he laid down his rights as son. While fear stops us, if we are willing to lay down our rights and return to God, God will accept us. Pastor Sam encouraged the congregation to examine their lives, to lay down their rights before God.
