Community Builder: Power of Words

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me is NOT true. We have all been hurt by words. Effects of verbal abuse can be equally harmful as physical abuse. Especially if the verbal abuse starts at a young age. Verbal abuse can leave many long-term effects.

Book - “The Bait of Satan” excerpt:

If God is giving words of life, Satan is hurling negative thoughts at us. As believers, we need to guard ourselves. It only takes one lie to stick in your mind that can mess up your entire outlook. The Spirit of Offense: Guard against taking offence at everything and anything, our identity should be secure in God and God alone.

Sometimes our toughest struggles are inside the church. Satan uses it to tear apart the church from the inside. The enemy is lurking everywhere and tries planting that seed (Psalm 55:12-14). The more you love someone and open up to them, the more potential there is for harm.

Ex) Marriage. Couple being on verge of divorce.

Ex) 40-year-old man had unforgiveness toward his mom. The man finally got up courage to call his mom for second time in his life and forgive her, and they reconciled. Now every time the man meets with

God he weeps because God’s presence is so rich. God wants to heal you.

Words can lift you up. The Bible is filled with words of encouragement. This is God’s key vehicle for communicating with you. We must guard against the negative/attacking words, but be open to receiving God’s word. God loves you!

We must create time to be with God.

Sarah Young devotional book: Enjoy the warmth of My presence shining upon you... I delight in you more then you can imagine.

God meets with you when you carve out some time to spend focused uninterrupted time with Him. You must find some personal quiet alone time with God. Create a space in your house that is meant for only you and God. Cultivate your heart in such a way that when God speaks to you, you are open to receiving it.

Example devotional books PSam reads.

“Seeking His Face” - Scriptures with prayer points.

“We are Going on a Bear Hunt”- Kids book. We will go through the day together.

Words from friends can be encouraging.

Letter written to PSam 20 years ago. While he was leading Junior High ministry. He keeps this letter of encouragement to remind himself that somebody believed in him.

Letter from his wife at 2nd wedding anniversary (11 years ago). He also keeps this encouraging letter to remind him to be the best husband and father possible.

Letters are incredibly powerful too.

Every single one of us can help to encourage or impact others. PSam gave two letters. Write an encouraging letter to:

1 - person that you are very close to, but have had some struggles recently.

2 - a person not as close to you.

Pray to the Lord: 2 people in this church that you can write a letter to for encouragement. Write a life-giving letter to these two people and give to them no later than next week. God’s words spoken over you are spirit and life.

2 Corinthians 3:2-3 “You yourselves are a letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

We carry within us God’s word. Christ is the living word. God’s letter to us is the Bible.
